Coolfer Report: The State of the Compact Disc
A new Coolfer report titled "The State of the Compact Disc" takes a snapshot of the CD. It is a look at the format's struggles this decade, how retail has changed over the last few turbulent years, which factors will lead to continued lower sales and why potential still exists. The 12-page report contains sales forecasts sales through 2011 based on the many forces in the marketplace that influence CD purchases.
CD sales were down 16.3% at the mid-point of 2008. That was an improvement over the 19.4% drop a year earlier, and better than most expected. Major shocks to retail in the form of store closings and reductions in shelf space dramatically impacted sales in 2007. While sales will continue to taper off in the coming years, the rate of decline is expected to slow to 16% in 2008 and 14% in 2009.
