The £99.99 Feeding Frenzy
It looks like 2009 will be the year of download binging. Services providing either unlimited access (Comes With Music) or inexpensive, bulk downloads (music pre-loaded onto Dell computers) show labels are seeking new ways to engage music fans who want more than an occasional song.
This one is different. No DRM, and the catalog is off to a good start. The Datz Music Lounge will offer 12 months of unlimited access to its catalog of MP3 downloads for only £99.99. Music Week reports EMI, Warner Music Group, Beggars Group and The Orchard are currently on board -- that puts the store at about two million tracks.
A USB dongle is needed to access the store. The dongle will be sold at Sainsbury’s stores and on the Datz website. Only 100,000 units will be available initially.
