• Rob Stevenson will be president of Virgin US in a few weeks. He will report to Nick Gatfield, president of A&R for North America, U.K. and Ireland. This hire is somewhat at odds with published reports about EMI's structure. Many previous reports about the company's organizational structure indicated that EMI does not believe in label presidents -- they didn't fit in the global functional matrix -- and would assign A&R presidents and marketing presidents to report to regional presidents. • Entertainment distributor Handleman has agreed to sell its Canadian music distribution operation to Anderson Merchandisers (which supplies music to Wal-Mart) and, separately, to sell a majority of its UK distribution operation to grocery giant Tesco. (Press release)

• Tamara Coniff, Billboard's group editorial director, is leaving to become president of music services for Front Line Management Group. (Billboard.biz)

• Australian record label Modular, home of Wolfmother, has run up a AU$5.9 million deficit through the end of 2007 and was in the hole about AU$1.8 million last year. The label says its investment in new talent will pay off this year. (Daily Telegraph)

• Warner Music Group's Dan Pelson, the SVP of Global Consumer Marketing, is going back to uPlayMe, the music sharing service he founded. In August 2007, uPlayMe landed a second round of funding from a group of media companies that included WMG. (paidContent)

• According to the Consumer Electronics Association, turntable shipments were up a third in April versus the same period in 2007. (Washington Times)
